On July 1, the legislature turned that into a bill; on July 7, she signed it into law as the Data Center Fair Share Act, alongside two companion bills that also rein in transmission-project oversight and utility return-on-equity. The state's own figures put the full package's savings at over $1 billion a year for ratepayers, including a flat $25 credit through the Residential Universal Bill Credit program for every residential customer, plus an additional $150 for low- and moderate-income households — arriving after a run of steep rate hikes that made energy affordability a defining issue in last year's governor's race. Trade coverage of the law's mechanism describes something sharper than a flat fee: a data center can fund a ratepayer's swap from an electric-resistance heater to a heat pump, or fund rooftop solar and a battery, and get priority interconnection to the grid in return. So far, New Jersey has the most specific answer to a question a lot of states are now asking. A flat moratorium, the tool a handful of towns and one state have already reached for, stops new construction outright. This law instead tries to make the boom's own money do useful things: pay down the specific costs (transmission upgrades, capacity-price spikes) that data centers are shown to cause, while funding the exact home upgrades — heat pumps, rooftop solar, batteries — that reduce a household's own exposure to volatile electricity and gas prices. Whether it works comes down to what the BPU actually writes into the tariff standards it's now required to design — the rulebook, not the signing, is the thing to watch.

2. Sunrun will pay you to let an AI data center live in your house.

No fund, no campus, just a compute node in your garage.

Sunrun, the home solar and battery company, is expanding a pilot it calls a "distributed data center": small compute nodes, about the size of a desktop tower, installed inside the homes of customers who already have its solar panels and batteries. Sunrun pays homeowners to host the hardware, though it hasn't disclosed how much, and it's in talks with enterprise compute buyers, homebuilders, and utilities without a named partner yet. What makes this more than a pitch deck is scale: Sunrun already has 1.1 million existing solar-and-battery customers it could tap if the pilot works. It isn't happening in isolation. Separately, Sunrun, Tesla, and Renew Home say linking home batteries and smart thermostats into a "virtual power plant" could add up to nearly 17 gigawatts of distributed grid capacity.

Put the two pieces together and the bet becomes clear: instead of building a new hyperscale campus and fighting a town over its water and power draw, treat a million existing rooftops as the data center. It's unproven at this scale, and the pay to homeowners is still undisclosed, which matters a great deal if you're the one hosting the box in your garage. 3. Spotify put an AI chatbot on your home screen. You didn't have to go looking for it.

The AI didn't wait for you to seek it out this time.

Spotify started rolling out an AI chatbot called "Talk to Spotify" this week, built into the home screen and the now-playing view of the app, for Premium subscribers in the US, Ireland, and Sweden. You type or speak a request — "play some artists I haven't heard before," or, from Spotify's own announcement, "add some Bad Bunny, just his recent stuff" — and it builds playlists, follows artists, and answers questions about a song's backstory, pulling from your actual listening history. Spotify's own announcement described it, notably for a company describing its own product, as putting "a Gemini/ChatGPT-esque chatbot" inside its homepage. The rollout is limited: beta, three countries, English only, Premium subscribers only.

This is a chatbot appearing inside an app hundreds of millions of people already open every day. Nobody had to go looking for it. Amazon Music did something similar with Alexa Plus last year, and the same pattern keeps repeating: a chatbot showing up on the screen you were already looking at, in a shopping app or a work tool nobody asked to have "AI-powered" added to it.
